Micropterna lateralis

Description

Length 14 to 18 mm. A fairly large uniformly orange-brown caddis fly with some paler speckling.

Similar Species

Micropterna sequax.

Around ditches and temporary streams.

When to see it

Adult: Late May to August. It is attracted to light.

Life History

Breeds in ditches and streams that dry up over summer. It lays before the water vanishes and the species passes the summer as newly hatched larvae in the damp bottom.

UK Status

Widespread and fairly frequent in Britain.

VC55 Status

Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
