The NatureSpot Photo of the Month for March is this image of an Otter, taken by NatureSpot contributor Barry S. More...
After facing decades of persecution and almost disappearing from the UK, Otters, Lutra lutra, have made a remarkable comeback in recent decades. They're now common, even in urban areas - but they're not easy to spot. Common, but not commonly seen. Highly stealthy for such a large animal and largely nocturnal, the normal proof of Otters are the piles of stinky poo ("spraint") they leave to communicate with each other - Otter social media. This secretive nature makes a remarkable photo like this month's winner a remarkable achievement, and allows us - especially the majority of us who have never had the opportunity to witness a wild otter in its natural habitat - to celebrate the survival of our native species.
