The Drift is an ancient track that follows the boundary between Lincolnshire and Leicestershire, forming part of the modern long distance footpath known as The Viking Way. A section of The Drift between the A607 and Saltby airfield is part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), designated because it is one of the best remaining examples of limestone grassland in Lincolnshire. Lowland calcareous grassland is rare throughout Europe and is ecologically rich in a range of plants and insects not found elsewhere. The site is managed by Lincolnshire County Council but the border of the Watsonian vice-county (VC55 - Leicestershire and Rutland) still runs done the middle of the track, so any records from the west side can be recorded on NatureSpot (just!).
The north east corner of Leicestershire is one of the least well recorded parts of the County, so if you want a day out in one of our most ecologically fascinating areas, head for The Drift.
Purple Milk-vetch Astragalus danicus, Common Rockrose Helianthemum nummularium and Horseshoe Vetch Hippocrepis comosa have been recorded.
