Slender Wood Borer Wasp - Trypoxylon attenuatum

Length about 8 mm. A blackish, slender bodied wasp.

Most solitary bees and wasps are difficult to identify, and can rarely be identified from photos taken in the field.  All red-rated records should include a photo or set of photos of the specimen, illustrating the key characters taken from a standard key, which should also be referenced (e.g. ‘Falk, 2015’).  The full set of key characters are generally not visible in field photos and photos are rarely sharp enough. Various habitats, often in well vegetated areas.

Summer and autumn.

Nests are located in hollow plant stems such as bramble, reeds etc., and are provisioned with dead spiders. This species will attempt to enter and usurp the nest of other aculeates of all species.

Fairly widespread in Britain, but more frequent in the southern parts.

Thought to be fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
