Chrysopa perla

Length: 10 to 12 mm, Wingspan: 25 to 30 mm. This is a blue-green lacewing with black wing veins and extensive black markings on its head and thorax. The second antennal segment is black and it also has a black underside to its abdomen. 

A red box around the image indicates that we think it is likely to be this species but can't be 100% certain.

The other similar species is the supposedly rare Chrysopa dorsalis which is associated with Pine trees. The main distinguishing feature is the pale spot between the eyes - which is roundish in C. perla and more oval in C. dorsalis.

Scrubby grassland and woodland edge.

All year round hibernating in winter with the peak time being May to August

The adults feed on flower nectar and are predators of aphids.

Common and widespread in most of Britain as far north as southern Scotland.

Common in Leicestershire and Rutland. At least 70 records have been submitted for this species according to the 'Checklist of Neuroptera and allies in VC55' published in 2018.
