We've changed our legal status - what does that mean?

NatureSpot has been a Registered Charity since the outset, but also became a limited company (limited by guarantee) to provide the underlying legal framework. Unless you're a lawyer or an accountant, UK charity governance structures probably don't mean much to you, but as a company NatureSpot had to jump through similar legal and financial hoops to all other companies, including those with multi million pounds per year income. It's a lot of paperwork and admin for a small volunteer organization like us. In recent times the Charity Commission has developed a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) as an alternative legal structure specifically for charities, offering corporate status without having to register as a company. It is regulated solely by the Charity Commission so becoming a CIO means less admin for us. Apart from that, there's really no difference, we are still a registered charity.
