The NatureSpot Photo of the Month for November is this image of a Symphylid, Scutigerella agg, taken by NatureSpot contributor Peter Smith. More...
Winter has arrived and many species have become hard to find. However, down in the leaf litter and under logs, out of the wind, rain and frost, life goes on - you just have to look a bit harder for it. Symphyla resemble tiny centipedes (to which they are closely related), but are almost universally overlooked. Partly this is because of their small size, but even among enthusiasts for smaller wildlife, they are not popular as they are difficult to identify (even with the relevant keys). For this reason NatureSpot accepts aggregate records for this genus.
