Ixodes ricinus

One of the main reasons for NatureSpot is to help people connect with nature, not be afraid of it - but we want you to stay safe. More...

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by infected ticks. It is easier to treat if diagnosed early. In England tick activity increases during spring, peaking from April to June. During this period, the risk of acquiring a tick bite is highest. Don't be afraid, but please do stay safe:

We know relatively little about ticks in Leicestershire and Rutland. Partly this is because they can rarely be identified from photographs. If you find any ticks, particularly in rural sites, if you are able to preserve them in alcohol we can arrange to have them identified for you by an expert (email: info@naturespot.org ) and you will contribute towards our knowledge of these arachnids.
