A major new book on Leicestershire natural history has been published. More...
More than Meets the Eye – The Wildlife of Grace Dieu, Leicestershire is the outcome of a Loughborough Naturalists survey project. The area is considered one of the best remaining areas in Leicestershire as regards wildlife, and its historic importance is well-documented. Authors Stephen Woodward and Helen Ikin cover a wide range of plant and animal groups in 22 chapters. The flowering plants have received a lot of attention over four centuries, with a total list exceeding 600 taxa. Many “lost” species have been re-found and nearly 100 new county records are reported. At 310 pages long, the book is illustrated in full colour throughout and snippets of natural history are presented in captions and feature boxes – it is much more than just a catalogue. For each taxonomic group, the authors give an account of previous recording, fieldwork methods, and how they went about securing accurate identifications.
