The historic village of Ratby lies a few miles to the west of Leicester and has a population of around 4000. Within the parish is Bury Camp, an iron age encampment dating back 3000 years. Ratby Church dates back to the 13th century and the site may have had a longer history as a Yew tree outside the main entrance has been dated as 2000 years old. The National Forest boundary runs through the village and there has been much tree planting on former agricultural fields. The parish is blessed with numerous green spaces of significant wildlife interest, including Martinshaw Wood.

iRecord and NatureSpot will be unavailable due to maintenance from 5pm on Wednesday 27th May until noon on Thursday 28th May.

Hedgehogs in Ratby

Hedgehog

Ratby resident, Mary Hartfield, is a self-confessed Hedgehog champion and a foster carer for weak or injured hogs. She would love to see more residents in the village make space for Hedgehogs by simply making a hole in their garden fence to let them roam. Several villagers have already done this, helping to create a Ratby Hedgehog Highway. Read more about Mary’s Hedgehog work.
