Barkestone, Plungar and Redmile are part of a joint parish established in 1936. Barkestone featured in the Domesday Book in 1086 and is believed to have origins dating back to the 7th century. Located in the far north-east of Leicestershire, it lies within the Vale of Belvoir and is crossed by the Grantham Canal, now disused but a very important wildlife habitat. There is a good network of public footpaths around the area and giving access to the surrounding countryside.

Parish Update

Barkestone, Plungar and Redmile Parish Council has joined the verge biodiversity project and is working with NatureSpot and the County Council to improve several verges in the parish. These verges will be left unmown during the summer and surveyed to identify the wildflowers found there. Read more on the Wild Places pages for these verges - links above.

Golden-bloomed Grey Longhorn Beetle

Beetle

This is a spectacular beetle with a very long name! The 'long-horn' beetles get their name from their extremely long antennae, often longer than the body. The Golden-bloomed Grey Longhorn can be found on various plants usually in May and June. This one was photographed along the Grantham Canal in Barkestone.
