Our Leicestershire and Rutland Species Library has now passed the 3,000 barrier and continues to grow at more than a new species every day. The Species Library offers photos (all taken locally), descriptions and status information for every species - together with a map showing every record submitted to NatureSpot. The 3,000'th species was the sawfly - Pamphilius betulae. More...
The most numerous group in the library is moths with over 740 species. Next is wildflowers (418), beetles (247) and fungi (223). However the most comprehensively covered group is butterflies, with nearly every Leicestershire and Rutland species represented. A full list of the group coverage can be seen on the species count.
The 3,000'th species added was the sawfly Pamphilius betulae (illustrated) which is believed to be the first for Leicestershire and Rutland. It was recorded by Nigel Hardy at Swithland Wood.
