Zygina flammigera

Description

Length 3 mm.  Forewings with a red zigzag pattern.  The area of the clavus between the red zigzags is pale. and the scutellum is brown.  In males, the basal segment and adjacent segment of the rear tarsi are pale and the apical segment and part of the middle segment are darkened.

Similar Species

Zygina angusta/ordinaria have a smoky tint over the clavus betwen the red zigzags and a dark scutellum.  Zygina tiliae/suavis/schneideri have a pale yellowish scutellum or with red markings; male tarsi are all darkened.

Habitat

Various deciduous trees, especially oak, hawthorn and Prunus; overwinters in conifers, holly, ivy and other evergreens
