White Saddle - Helvella crispa

Description

This fungus is readily identified by its irregularly shaped creamy whitish cap, fluted stem, and fuzzy undersurfaces. The saddle-shaped cap may have two or three major undulations and many minor curled contortions and is typically 3 to 8cm across.

Under broad leaved trees, particularly beech and oak, and most often beside well-trodden paths.

When to see it

Summer and autumn.

Widespread and fairly frequent in Britain.
