Vinegar Cup - Helvella acetabulum
This relatively large cup-shaped fungus is characterized by a mid-brown fruit body with prominent pallid to cream-coloured branching ribs resembling a cabbage leaf; for this reason it is sometimes known as the Cabbage-leaf Helvella. The fruit bodies can reach dimensions of 6 cm or more across by 4 cm high. There are other similar species so it is best to have a specimen checked by an expert.
Usually found among short grasses under either hardwood or conifer trees.
April to June.
Fairly frequent in Britain.
There had been about 20 records for this species in Leicestershire and Rutland prior to April 2016.
