Velvet Mite agg. - Trombidiidae sp.

There are several similar species in the mite family Trombidiidae, often red and covered with setae giving a velvet appearance. The velvety hair on the bodies of the adults act as feelers. The adults have four pairs of legs, and they use the front two legs to judge their movements. They also have a pair of eyes. Detailed examination of each individual is required in order to determine species. Unlike adults, the larvae of red velvet mites have only three pairs of legs.

Common and widespread in Britain, but not a well recorded group.

Common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
