Sulphur Clover - Trifolium ochroleucon

Description

A short to medium rather hairy clover, with short rhizomes and ascending stems. Leaflets oblong to lanceolate, Stipules oblong with a slender apex. Flowers yellowy white, rarely pinkish. 15 to 20 mm with short stalked or unstalked globose or oblong heads, terminal.

Similar Species

Trifolium pannonicum (Hungarian Clover). A scarce casual, probably a grass-seed contaminant, that may turn up.

Whitish-yellow flower; flowers 15-20, in subsessile racemes ((i.e flower-heads either unstalked or with very short stalk).  T pannonicum usually has more florets and at least some flower heads are stalked.  

Recording advice

It is nationally scarce and locally rare, so a specimen should not be taken.  Provide a photograph of whole plant showing subsessile flower heads (a side-on close-up of flower head will help) (RPR)

Nationally scarce - England Red List: Vulnerable. GB Red List: Near Threatened

VC55 Status

Rare in Leicestershire and Rutland. In the Flora of Leicestershire (Primavesi and Evans 1988) it was not recorded, but was present in 3 tetrads in the Flora of Rutland (Messenger 1971).

In the current checklist, it is listed as Native and rare, on calcareous grassland, with recent records from limestone sites in the the east of Rutland.  

It is listed on the current VC55 Rare Plant Register (Hall and Woodward 2022) as Locally Rare (i.e. present in less than 3 sites)
