Soapy Knight - Tricholoma saponaceum

Description

The caps are smooth and greasy, very variable in colour fbut often with a olive-greyish darker centre and pale edge.  Gills are cream to pale greenish-grey; stem is buff and may be pinker at base.  One variety has dark grey squamules on the stem. The smell is soapy.

Other grey Tricholoma, but the soapy smell is characteristic

Habitat

Found in coniferous and broadleaf woodland.

When to see it

Appears in autumn, sometimes forming large groups.
