Simulium angustipes agg.
One of a group of four species in the subgenus Eusimulium likely to be encountered in Britain with S.angustipes being the most likely to occur in VC55. The members of this group can be very difficult to identify and sometimes they can only be reliably separated by testing DNA for this reason we have decided to treat this group as an aggregate for the purposes of this website. They are small stout-bodied biting flies.
Of the four British species, S.aureum and S.angustipes appear to be the most widespread, with S. aureum being more upland in habitat. S.velutinum appears to be confined to Wales and the Welsh borders, while S.petricolum as a species in Britain is probably confined to Sussex.
Various habitats but especially at water margins.
Spring and summer.
They have aquatic larvae. Adults suck the blood of birds as well as humans and other mammals.
