Silky Wainscot - Chilodes maritima

Wingspan 29 to 36 mm. A rather unusual species, which has a number of distinctive forms, and can resemble some of the Pyralidae.

It may be found in reedbeds containing Common Reed.

It is readily attracted to light and flies from June to August.

The larvae are partially carnivorous, feeding on insects, including pupae of other wainscots, internally within the stems of Common Reed.

Distributed locally in the south and south-east of England, with scattered colonies elsewhere in Britain. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as local.

It appears to be uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland, where there are few records. L&R Moth Group status = D (rare or rarely recorded).
