Sheathed Woodtuft - Kuehneromyces mutabilis
The cap is 3 to 8 cm in diameter, convex becoming flattened with a broad umbo; bright tan, drying out to pale ochre from the centre and giving a two-toned (zonate) appearance. The gills are adnate and crowded, pale ochre at first and become cinnamon as the spores mature.
The Funeral Bell is similar but lacks the scurfy stipe.
On stumps, felled trunks and logs of broad leaf trees, particularly birch.
Throughout the year, but most plentiful in summer and autumn.
Often grows in large clumps.
Widespread and fairly frequent in Britain.
Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
