Description

Up to 30 cm across, these rust-brown brackets have concentric zoning on a distinctive, downy upper surface that is usually wrinkled at the edges. The cap is usually quite broadly attached to the substrate without a stem.

Identification difficulty
Habitat

On dead broad-leaf trees, notably Ash but sometimes found on Poplar, Beech and Oak.

When to see it

Late summer to winter

UK Status

Fairly common in much of Britain.

VC55 Status

Fairly common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
