Sericoderus lateralis
A very small (only 1 mm) brown beetle. There are other very similar species and detailed examination is needed.
Generally speaking Sericoderus lateralis is smaller and darker than the similar Sericoderus brevicornis.
Unless identified by a recognised expert, a photo is required and the specimen should be examined with a microscope. In the comments box, state the key or ID method used and describe the size and identifying characters.
Usually associated with decaying fungi, especially bracket fungi, but has been recorded in various other habitats.
Lack of records makes it difficult to determine true status, but it would appear to be quite widespread in the southern half of Britain, possible becoming less common further north.
Rare or rarely recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland.
