Redlead Roundhead - Leratiomyces ceres

Cap 2 to 6 cm in diameter with thin flesh and a bright red to orange top which is convex to flat in age. It has partial veil remnants when young. The cap surface is usually dry, but can be slightly viscid when moist. The spores are purple / brown.

Stropharia rugosoannulata is similar and also commonly found growing on wood chips, though this species has a duller red cap.

It is usually found growing gregariously on wood chips.

Most of the year.

Often found growing in large clusters on woodchip mulch.

This is one of the most common and distinctive mushrooms found on woodchips.

Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
