Potato Earthball - Scleroderma bovista
A medium sized earthball being 2 to 5 cm in diameter. This species does not have the ‘leopard skin’ pattern that is common with several of the other common earthballs, but has a relatively smooth to finely roughened or scaly peridium. It is usually brownish in appearance.
Associated with Lime trees and preferring sandier soils.
Autumn.
Widespread in Britain.
Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
