Polydesmus inconstans

This is a brown flat-backed millipede typical of the genus and requires detailed examination before arriving at an id.

It is not possible to reliably identify Polydesmus millipedes without examination of male gonopods or female epigynal structures. Immatures cannot be identified.

Found in ground layer vegetation in a variety of habitats.

Most frequently recorded from April to June. 

Both sexes die following reproduction so few adults are present from late summer through to the following spring when a new generation matures.

Common and widespread in Britain.

Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
