Podosphaera ferruginea
Podosphaera ferruginea is a powdery mildew which affects Sanguisorba species such as Great Burnet and Salad Burnet, however there is some taxonomic uncertainty between with the very similarly named Podosphaera fuliginea. NBN treats Podosphaera ferruginea as a synonym of Podosphaera fuliginea, whereas the Plant Parasites of Europe website treats them separately - showing Podosphaera ferruginea as affecting Sanguisorba species (Burnets) and Podosphaera fuliginea as affecting Veronica species (Speedwells) (see links below). At the moment our pages follow the way these species are treated by the Plant Parasites of Europe website.
Unless identified by a recognised expert, a photo is required and the specimen should be examined with a microscope. In the comments box, state the key or ID method used and describe the size and identifying characters.
The mildew may occur anywhere the host Sanguisorba species are found.
The mildew may be observed when the host Sanguisorba species are in leaf.
It seems to be widespread in Britain, but true status is difficult to determine due to lack of records.
Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
