Philonthus varians
Length about 6 mm. The brownish elytra often show some degree of red marking or spots.
Associated with decaying matter and dung.
Spring to autumn.
Widespread and fairly frequent in Britain.
Fairly common in Leicestershire and Rutland. There were a total of 122 VC55 records for this species up to March 2015.
