A medium sized (9 or 10 mm) dark brown or blackish rove beetle.

Found in a variety of habitats including herbivore dung, carrion and rotten fungi.
Can be encountered in most months, with a possible peak around April & May.
Widespread, particularly in the southern half of Britain.
Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
