Notiophilus substriatus
A small (5 mm) beetle with large bulging eyes and brassy brown studded elytra. Distinguished from N. biguttatus by the finer elytral pores.
It usually prefers open ground with short, sparse vegetation and is often recorded from urban areas and fairly dry places.
Peak is March to June
A day-time hunter, often seen scurrying around on the ground.
Fairly widespread in Britain but not really common, and usually only single individual found.
Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland. There were a total of 39 VC55 records for this species up to March 2015.
