Nedyus quadrimaculatus

Length about 3 mm. This small dark and very convex weevil may often be rocognised by the presence of two prominent patches of pale scales on the elytra although these may be absent and the extent of pale scaling in general varies.

Nedyus quadrimaculatus is broadly similar to Parethelcus pollinarius and both are common on nettles. The white spots on the elytra of Nedyus are usually distinctive though early in the year they may be worn - fresh adults appear in mid summer. Parethelcus also has dark tibiae and a large tooth on the underside of the front femur. It also has a projection on the side of the pronotum.

Unless identified by a recognised expert, good photos are required that show the key ID features. Also state the beetle's size in the comments box.

Common in Wales, central and southern England, fewer records from elsewhere in Britain but probably under recorded there.

Common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
