Mosaic Puffball - Lycoperdon utriforme

Alternative names
Handkea utriformis
Description

A large grassland species with a short wide stem.  The puffball is covered in warty scales that wear off to show a brown skin.   Eventualy the top part disintegrates to show the brown spore mass.

The name 'mosaic puffball' is misleading; many species in this family of puffballs have a mosaic pattern once the surface spines or warts have rubbed off.
