Description

Wingspan 11 to 16 mm. This species is sexually dimorphic, with the males being generally larger and with less distinct forewing markings.

Often in well wooded areas.

When to see it

The adult moths fly in May and June, from dusk onwards.

Life History

The life history of the early stages is imperfectly known, though in captivity they have fed on Hawthorn.

UK Status

Locally frequent in parts of England, and occurring in Wales and Scotland. In the Butterfly Conservation’s Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as local.

VC55 Status

Fairly frequent but not common in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = B (scarce resident or restricted distribution or regular migrant).
