Hybrid Campion - Silene latifolia x dioica = S. x hampeana

Description

Medium to tall plant, a cross between Silene dioica x Silene latifolia, it is fully fertile and vigorous, even replacing the parent plants. Flowers pale to mid pink.

Intermediate in character to the parent species.  Very variable, and is often fertile so it can back-cross with one of the parents, producing a range of flower colours and other characteristics.  Flower colour alone cannot be used to identify the hybrid.

Anywhere that Red Campion and White Campion occur.

Increasingly common throughout Britain.

VC55 Status

Increasingly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland. In the 1979 Flora survey of Leicestershire it was found in 32 of the 617 tetrads.
