Heliozela hammoniella

Wingspan about 6 mm.  A tiny species whose larvae mine the leaves of Birch species. The mine is more easily recorded than the adult. It starts in the petiole and midrib then leads to an oval blotch, and finally a cut-out in the leaf-blade.

Mine: July – August.  The adult moths fly in May and June.

Distributed in England and Wales north to Cumbria, it is local in its distribution. In the Butterfly Conservation's Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as local.

Rarely recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland.
