Geophilus flavus
Up to 45 mm, a long and thin bright yellow centipede with a red/brown head. It has 49 to 57 pairs of legs (males 49-55, females 51-57). The head is longer than broad and the antennae are relatively long with the segments being elongate. The inner margin of the poison claw is crenulated with 30-40 rounded scallops, though these are only visible under high magnification. There are 6-10 pores on the the last leg-bearing segment, mainly along the margin of the meta sternite. It lacks carpophagus fossae on the sternites.
Several other geophilid centipedes are similar and microscopic examination is needed to identify the species.
Unless identified by a recognised expert, a photo is required and the specimen should be examined with a microscope. In the comments box, state the key or ID method used and describe the size and identifying characters.
In the upper layer of the soil, under stones etc.
All year round.
Widespread and fairly common in Britain.
Common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
