Frosty Funnel - Clitocybe phyllophila

This is a 5 to 10 cm white or creamy coloured fungus that may be fairly flat at first but tends to become funnel shaped. The cap develops ochre patches with age. The flesh has a pleasant fruity smell. The stem grows to 8cm and has a swollen, downy base.

The Ivory Funnel, Clitocybe rivulosa, is very similar but grows in grassland rather than woodland.

Amongst leaf litter and pine needles in woods, but may also be found in gardens and compost heaps.

Autumn

Grows in groups or dense clusters.

Widespread but not particularly common in Britain, fewer records from Scotland.

Occasional in Leicestershire and Rutland.
