Four-spotted Footman - Lithosia quadra
Wingspan 35 to 55 mm. This is a sexually dimorphic species and only the females have the spots which give the species its name; often there appears to be only three spots, as the wings overlap when at rest.
Usually recorded at light.
It flies from July to September or early October.
The larvae feed on lichens on the bark of deciduous trees.
Resident along the south-west coast of England and Wales, and is also an occasional migrant. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as a migrant.
Rare in Leicestershire and Rutland where the Horninghold record of October 2013 is only the second for VC55. L&R Moth Group status = D (rare or rarely recorded).
