Four-barred Major - Oxycera rara

Body length 7mm. This is a beautiful little yellow and black soldier fly, and although small it is one of the largest of the eleven species in the genus. This species differs in being entirely black on the second tergite.

Wetland, wet meadows and marshes, around pools and streams and various other damper areas, often on the leaves of trees.

June to August

Larvae have been found in damp moss.

Widespread as far north as Yorkshire, this is one of the commonest of the Oxycera, but despite this it is a local species.

Occasional in Leicestershire and Rutland.
