Description

A fairly small hoverfly with a black shiny appearance in the field, but with whitish markings when examined in detail. There are other very similar species and detailed examination is needed.

Habitat

Often found in gardens where it is a pest of bulbs, especially daffodils but scarcer in the wider countryside.

Mainly found in the southern half of Britain becoming less frequent further north.
