Eudasyphora cyanella

This shiny green fly gradually become bronze as it ages. As with all muscidae flies, the fourth wing vein (M) bends gently (not sharply) forwards. It has hairy eyes and a white 'collar' on the front of the thorax.

Superficially this looks like the 'greenbottle', Lucilia, which is in the Calliphoridae family (blowflies) which have a sharp kink in wing vein M. Also Eudasyphora has a dark stripes extending backwards from the pale front of the thorax and Lucilia doesn't have this.

Sometimes overwinters indoors but often seen sunning itself outside on walls etc.

Because this fly overwinters it is one of the first to appear each year, remaining with us from March through to October but most common in April and May.

Overwinters in adult stage.

Common and widespread in England and Wales.

Common in Leicestershire and Rutland
