Deceptive Earthtongue - Geoglossum fallax
Fruiting body club-shaped, 2-7 cm tall, fertile "head," 2-6 mm thick, flattened, sometimes grooved, brown to dark-brown, rarely black, minutely hairy. Stipe round, 1-2 mm thick, solid at the base, often hollow near the apex, coloured like the "head," roughened or with scattered small scales.
Other Earth-tongues
Scattered mossy places or in areas of short grass with a lot of moss. Restricted to the same unfertilized grasslands that support Waxcap fungi.
Late autumn
Widespread but uncommon; only found in suitable grassland habitats.
Uncommon and restricted to a few sites having unimproved grassland.
