Common Shorebug - Saldula saltatoria

Length 4 to 4.5 mm.  This genus comprises 11 rather oval saldids which have an entirely dark pronotum and forewings which completely overlap. There are several very similar species which are often difficult to identify. In S. saltatoria, the most common species, there are at least two pale spots along the costal margin, although the pattern on forewings can be very variable. The dark streak on the centre of the fore tibia is not continuous with the dark base and apex.

Found alongside waterways, ponds and ditches.

Adults occur all year round but are most often recorded in summer.

A predatory species.

Widespread and fairly frequent in Britain.

Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
