Common Funnel - Infundibulicybe gibba
Initially convex, but expanding into a funnel-shaped, often with a small umbo in the centre of the cap. The surface is silky or felt-like and is pale-pinkish buff or pale ochre. The cap flesh becomes thinner towards the margin, which is initially slightly inrolled. Gills are closely crowded, very decurrent and white; stem is whitish/pale buff, smooth or finely fibrillose. Smell of bitter almonds.
Other Funnels in this family. The bitter almond smell of Common Funnel helps to distinguish it from several similar species (ref. Fascinated by Fungi, P. O' Reilly).
Photograph from top down, in side view and from underneath to show gills and full length of stipe. Note habitat and substrate, and indicate size (length of stipe and width of cap) and smell.
In coniferous and deciduous woodland, often along grassy glades.
Early summer until late autumn
Widespread and common (Kibby, Vol.2, 2020)
Occasional in Leicestershire and Rutland.
