Coleophora trigeminella
Size 8 to 20 mm. The adult moths have red-brown or ochreous forewings with a creamy costal streak.
Adult: Unless identified by a recognised expert, a photo is required and the specimen should be confirmed by gen det.
Larval Case: It recording the larval case please provide a photograph and also indicate the length of the case and the host plant species upon which it was feeding.
Hedgerows, orchards and parks where the larval foodplants occur.
Flying in June.
The larva constructs a reddish brown, tubular silken case of only 5 or 6 mm. from which it feeds mainly on the buds of their chosen foodplants, Hawthorn and Apple.
Uncommon and local in Britain. In the Butterfly Conservation's Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as Nationally Scarce A.
Rare in Leicestershire and Rutland. The Broughton Astley record of 16th June 2022 is the first for VC55.
