Coleophora binderella
Grey Alder Case-Bearer
Wingspan 8 to 12 mm. As with most Coleophora species gen det is required for species id.
Wooded areas where the foodplants occur.
The adults emerge in late June or July.
The eggs of this species are laid on the underside of leaves of Alder, Hazel, Birch or Hornbeam. The larva creates its case from a portion of the leaf, and then attaches to the underside of the leaf, with the larva mining the leaf from beneath. The larvae overwinter in the case attached to a leaf or twig.
Widespread but rather local. It is found mainly in the southern half of Britain. In the Butterfly Conservation's Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as local.
Rare in Leicestershire and Rutland. The Sapcote record of 25th June 2018 is the first for VC55.
