11 Spot Ladybird - Coccinella undecimpunctata
Length 4 to 5 mm. Although known as the 11 Spot Ladybird, it may in fact have between 7 and 11 black spots on a red background. The leg colour is black.
This species can be identified with care but there are similar species that it could be confused with. Please provide a photograph to support your record, and if possible please retain the specimen until identification has been confirmed.
Often coastal, but sometimes found inland, mainly in sandy areas.
Summer and early autumn.
Overwinters in leaf litter and inside buildings
Widespread in England, though less common, and often local away from the coast. Mainly coastal in Scotland and Wales.
Fairly frequent but rather local in Leicestershire & Rutland
