Ciliated Fringewort - Ptilidium ciliare

Description

This large, distinctive species has shoots up to 3 mm wide, and grows in reddish brown to yellow green tufts. The stems are pinnate or bipinnate, and have short, rounded branches with crowded overlapping leaves. Leaves are up to 2.8 mm wide and 2.3 mm long, with numerous long, thin teeth on the margins, which can disguise their bilobed nature. Fertile plants and capsules are very rare.

Habitat

Acidic grassland, mossy banks, rocky slopes and screes, wall tops, bogs and heathy woodlands where it is usually found with other bryophytes. The substrate is generally acidic and well drained.
