Cercyon lateralis
A very small species, measuring around 2.5 to 3mm in length. The head and shoulders are quite dark brown or blackish fading to a more golden or reddish brown nearer the tips of the elytra. Care is needed with identification as there are other, similar species.
In herbivore dung.
All year round but mainly in the summer months.
Widespread and fairly frequent in Britain.
Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland. There were a total of 52 VC55 records for this species up to March 2015.
