Black-grass - Alopecurus myosuroides
20 to 80 cm tall. The slender erect stems that have few nodes may be kneed at the base. Green hairless leaves are flat and rough above. Panicle is dense and very narrow, 2 to 12 cm long and 3 to 6 mm wide, yellowish-green to purplish, and tapering at the tip.
It rarely occurs outside of cultivated land. A serious arable weed when present.
May to August.
Annual.
Found mainly in the cereal growing areas of southern and eastern England and not tolerant of sandy soils.
Occasional in Leicestershire and Rutland. In the 1979 Flora survey of Leicestershire it was found in 108 of the 617 tetrads.
